The history of the U.S. Green Building Council San Diego Chapter begins in 2002. There were 21 people in attendance in an initial organizing meeting, and they decided that each person would be “on the board”. Since then, membership has risen steadily to more than 500 individual chapter members. In San Diego County there are more than 1,200 LEED Accredited Professionals and Green Associates. In the public directory of LEED Projects through December 2011, there are more than 150 LEED Certified Projects (does not include LEED for Homes) in San Diego, totaling more than 23,000,000 square feet of floor area. There are more than 480 LEED Registered projects in San Diego, totaling more than 70,000,000 square feet.

Milestones in the History of the San Diego Chapter
1994: Ridgehaven Green Office Building is completed by the City of San Diego, becoming the first EnergyStar building in the world. This project was instrumental in launching the national U.S. Green Building Council.
2002: San Diego Chapter Organizing Group Forms
2004: First LEED Certification in San Diego goes to Pfizer's La Jolla Campus, Buildings 4-7
2005: San Diego Chapter Articles of Incorporation filed
2007: IRS Status Granted as a 501(c)(3), public benefit non-profit corporation
2007: First LEED Platinum project in San Diego goes to the Ranch House at Del Sur
2009: Chapter Receives Sempra Energy Foundation, Environmental Champion Award
2011: San Diego Chapter opens its first office, 5010 Shoreham Place, San Diego, CA 92122
