LEED 2012 2nd Public Comment – Now Open

The LEED 2012 2nd Public Comment Period is open for all interested USGBC stakeholders to participate through August 31. USGBC received nearly 6,000 public comments from the 1st Public Comment period (open November 2010 - January 2011), and has been working with Technical Advisory Groups and other LEED committees to address comments and revise rating system requirements based on feedback. The 2nd Public Comment draft includes the BD&C, ID&C, EB:O+M, ND, and Homes rating systems. In this public comment period, stakeholders will also see that LEED 2012 for Healthcare is part of the draft, as a result of market demand for the product. Visit the LEED 2012 development webpage to view the drafts, review scorecards, and link to our live discussion forum hosted by LEEDuser.

Revisions to the MPR Supplemental Guidance and Rating System Selection Guidance

The Supplemental Guidance to the Minimum Program Requirements was written to help project teams understand if their building or space has the minimum characteristics needed for LEED certification. Revision 1, released in June 2011, has new direction and additional information regarding attached buildings, parking, defining site boundaries and more.

The Rating System Selection Guidance, which is a x helps project teams to understand which rating system their project should be registered under. This revision provides greater clarity on construction types, different rating systems for residential projects, and more.

LEEDOnline V3 System Requirements Update for Mac Users

Due to Apple's Safari 5.1 browser and Mac 0S v10.7 (Lion) dropping support for Adobe forms, Mac users with updated Safari browsers are not able to access LEED Online V3 on Apple computers at this time. We sincerely regret the inconvenience and will continue to work toward a solution.

EA and EQ Credit Fee Update

Effective September 1, 2011, GBCI will increase certain fees for Credit Interpretation Requests (CIRs) to $400 and for Appeals to $750 related to the following credits and prerequisites only:

BD&C: EAp1, EAp2/EAc1, EQp1
ID&C: EAp1, EAp2, EAc1.3, EQp1
EBO&M: EAp1, EAp2, EAc2.1, EAc2.2, EAc2.3, EQp1

The fee increase will help cover costs associated with the additional review resources necessary to review these complex credits and prerequisites. Additional technical guidance and training resources on these credits and prerequisites will be made available to registered project teams this fall free of charge. Helpful Hints

Site Photometric Plans
For versions of LEED prior to version 3/2009, a site photometric plan is not a required submittal for Sustainable Sites credit 8: Light Pollution Reduction but it is often difficult for reviewers to determine compliance with the LEED credit using the required detailed narrative. If your project has outdoor lighting and is pursuing SSc8,including a site photometric plan in your submittal increases chances of achieving credit compliance.

LEED Interpretations

USGBC has introduced LEED Interpretations to provide LEED project teams with official, precedent-setting rulings beyond the Project Credit Interpretation Rulings administered by GBCI. Because LEED Interpretations undergo USGBC’s rigorous committee and staff vetting process, they apply not only to the project requesting the ruling but also to LEED projects aiming to achieve the same LEED prerequisite, credit, or Minimum Program Requirement. LEED Interpretations are accessible through a searchable, publicly available, online database at usgbc.org/leedinterpretations. Anyone who has or creates ausgbc.org site user account may access this database.

NOTE: The first regularly scheduled quarterly update of the LEED Interpretations and Addenda database will coincide with the Second Quarter LEED Addenda release due in early May 2011. Content will include LEED Interpretations that must be adhered to by any LEED 2009 project registered after the posting date.

Sustainable Sites Credit 4 - Update to Option 3 Approach 1

USGBC has released two more resources to help LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance projects perform and analyze occupant commute surveys in SSc4: Alternative Commuting Transportation. The first is an approved alternative compliance path for projects using Option 3 (building occupant survey) Approach 1 (survey of all building occupants). The second is a free offline calculator to be used in line with this new alternative compliance path. Both of these resources apply to LEED for Existing Buildings: O&M v2008 and v2009 and are approved for immediate use. USGBC will formally publish this improvement in an upcoming LEED for Existing Buildings: O&M Reference Guide Addendum.

Based on registration date, project teams are required to adhere to rating system addenda, and it is strongly recommended that project teams adhere to reference guide addenda as well. All LEED rating systems are updated on a quarterly basis to reflect the published addenda. Addenda may be submitted via the LEED Questions form available at USGBC.org.
