On Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5, San Diego EarthWorks will once again produce a self-guided tour of homes and businesses in San Diego County that features sustainable building practices that are attractive, practical, and affordable today. These structures demonstrate that energy and resource-efficient residential and commercial design and construction are the right way to build. Sites on the tour will include new construction as well as rebuilds and retrofits.
Environmentally friendly construction and retrofit options are available to fit almost any budget or lifestyle. These days, everyone can find ways for their homes and businesses to do more for their pocketbooks as well as the planet.
The Tour takes place over over two days, with different sites available on each day, to allow participants to visit more sites.
What's On the Tour
Homes and businesses around throughout San Diego County will be open for touring.
The Tour has something for everyone. There are commercial sites and residential sites; sites that are still under construction, just completed, and ones that have been “lived in” for a while; new structures that were designed from the ground up, and ones that are remodels. Some of the sites were also on the last tour, so if you missed them you get another chance.
The structures will feature many different “green” building and landscaping options, including:
* Ecologically sound building materials and technologies (e.g., straw bale and PerformWall construction);
* Energy-efficient building components (e.g., “high-E” insulating windows);
* Water-efficiency features (e.g., gray water systems, native landscaping);
* Alternative energy technologies (e.g., solar electric and solar water heating);
* Healthy building materials (e.g., low-emission paints, nontoxic insulation, filtration systems);
* Recycled and/or reused materials (e.g., renewable bamboo flooring, recycled plastic carpet, composite decking);
* Xeriscaping – landscaping technique using native and drought-tolerant plants to minimize exterior water use.
Owners, architects, and builders will be available to answer questions about each project throughout the day.
The tour will include new sites, plus a selection of those from last year's tour (you can see how last year's new construction turned out!).
GreenBuilt Tour Guide Book
Free GreenBuilt Tour Guides, with descriptions of the tour sites, a glossary of “green” building terms, and a resource guide will be distributed at more than 100 sites throughout San Diego County. You can also pick up one at any GreenBuilt Tour site on the day of the tour.
The Guide Books will be available starting the first week of September. Check back here for a list of locations where you can pick up a guide.

The architect and designer Alfred HomannAlfred Homann grew up in South Zealand, Denmark. In 1976, he graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
During his years as a student, he worked for the distinguished architect Vilhelm Wohlert. In 1978, he opened his own design and architecture office in Denmark, and from 1987 to 1995 he also practiced as a designer in the U.S.
Homann is one of Denmark’s most renowned architects. His designs are featured in projects and exhibits worldwide. In the past few decades, Homann has received international awards for his buildings, furniture and luminaire designs. Since his collaboration with Louis Poulsen in 1976, he has designed award winning luminaires such as the Kipp and Nyhavn series.
He believes that furniture and lighting create ambience in a space. By using timeless luminaires and furniture, Homann is able to enhance an environment through a product’s shape, surface material and detail.
