About the 2010 FEAT Award Recipients:
MARK JORGENSEN
With more than 600,000 acres of land, Anza Borrego Desert State Park is the second-largest state park in the continental United States. Over one-fifth of San Diego County lies within it's boundaries. For 33 years Mark Jorgensen spent his life at Anza Borrego as a naturalist, resource ecologist and since 2001 as it's Superintendant before retiring this spring.
Always an outspoken advocate for the park, Mark is especially recognized for his love and knowledge of the desert and his unending efforts to save the Bighorn sheep. His drive to protect bighorns began in 1972 when he spent four summers studying the sheep in the park. Ever since then Mark has continued to advocate for Bighorn habitat throughout Southern California.
Mark's environmental efforts to protect desert environments extends beyond the United States. He helped raise funds for a park in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia and has helped the goverrnment of Abu Dhabi in planning for a park in the United Arab Emirates.
RICHARD HALSEY
Richard Halsey started his environmental journey when he joined the Sierra Club at age 15. He is the director of the California Chaparral Institute, a nonprofit research and educational organization focusing on the ecology of California's shrubland plant communities, wildland fire, and how Mediterranean-type ecosystems have helped shape human culture. Recognized as an expert on chaparral ecology, how communities can adapt to fire-prone environments and the importance of nature education, Richard Halsey is the voice for the chaparral of San Diego.
He is the author of Fire, Chaparral, and Survival in Southern California, which was awarded the 2008 Best Nonfiction-Local Interest Book by the San Diego Book Awards Association. Mr. Halsey taught biology for over thirty years in both public and private schools and was honored as Teacher of the Year for San Diego City Schools in 1991. Continuing his work in education, Mr. Halsey provides living history performances focusing on the Middle East in the 1100's and California in the 1800's and is a life-long student of the Chumash Indian culture.
PRESERVE CALAVERA
The mission of Preserve Calavera is to preserve, protect and enhance the natural resources of coastal north San Diego County. Started in 2002, Preserve Calavera has become one of the largest grass roots conservation groups in coastal north county. Originally focused on the preservation of land around Mt. Calavera and Lake Calavera in northeastern Carlsbad, Preserve Calavera soon realized that they couldn't protect an area surrounded by development and have it sustainable without the need to include all of the connecting wildlife corridors and the watershed.
Preserve Calavera has helped preserve over 250 acres of natural lands and led the community fundraising effort for the most recent preserve in north county- the Buena Vista Creek Ecological Reserve. They are into their second year of restoring 1.8 acres of that reserve. They also sponsor a wildlife tracking team and do quarterly surveys of local wildlife and are well known for events like "Coyote Speaks", to increase wildlife appreciation; "Eat the Invasives", a picnic on native plants; and "Have a Heart" which focuses on development that is needlessly damaging our priceless and dwindling natural lands.
