Living Building Challenge Symposium:
Defining a Pathway for Living Buildings in Our Region
09/21/2015, 10:30am - 4:30pm
Hosted by the SD Living Building Collaborative
Join us on September 21st for a special pre-conference workshop to get involved in the increasingly important conversation about how we can move closer to bringing Living Building projects to our region. Our conversation will include an introduction to the Living Building Challenge (LBC), a summary of a local feasibility study, and an open-forum discussion about LBC in our region. We are excited to welcome Brendan Cook, Net Zero Energy Manager ILFI, to kick off the day's agenda with the introduction to LBC.
The LBC rating system is our framework for envisioning and defining 'net-zero' as a goal in all areas of building performance, setting goals for the next step in San Diego's high performance buildings, and bringing us a step closer to resiliency in our local built environment.
This workshop and conversation will help launch one of our next research projects as Collaborative volunteers - understanding the regulatory framework for the Living Building Challenge in San Diego. This event will lead into another exciting day of content on September 22nd, at the San Diego Green Building Conference and Expo (#SDGBCE15) - more info about full conference program here!
More information about the SD Living Building Collaborative:
The Living Building Challenge v3.0 (LBC) is the most stringent green building rating system to which we aspire to design and build; with 20 required imperatives, net-zero and performance-driven requirements in 7 category areas, and requiring one year's worth of building data once the project is completed and fully occupied. Aptly named, the Living Building Challenge system sets high goals, making strategies like integrative design, passive design strategies, and a holistic approach to the design, construction, and operations of a project. The San Diego Living Building Collaborative (Collaborative) is one of our committees at the San Diego Green Building Council (SDGBC), focused on advancing LBC in our region through education and advocacy for the challenge of transforming our built environment towards true sustainability. With no LBC projects yet completed in San Diego County to use as a precedent, and an internal emphasis on project-based learning - the Collaborative embarked on a Feasibility Study of LBC implementation at a local net-zero energy building as a case study in 2014.
